Student leaders and mentors

By Dominican Convent Belgravia No Comments

Our Grade 4 to 8 students voted for Grade 7 Student Leaders and Grade 8 Mentors. Student Mentors were selected from learners who were Student Leaders in Grade 7 in 2023. Each mentor was assigned one or two Student Leaders to guide and assist throughout the year. These learners will be assigned responsibilities in and around the school during the formal school day.

Our Student Leaders and Mentors require strong, visible, natural, personal qualities displayed in their everyday activities to be selected as developing learners with natural leadership potential.

16 Grade 7 Student Leaders and 9 Grade 8 Student Leaders were announced on Wednesday 6 March at a school assembly. On Thursday 7 March the Student Leaders and Mentors and their badges were blessed by Father Letsie during Mass, and they committed themselves to their positions and responsibilities by reading aloud the Student Leaders Pledge.

Marist Mercy Care is one of the largest non-profit organisations in the Sundays River Valley. They run a number of incredibly enriching community based initiatives throughout the year that add great value to the lives of the children, youth and aged in the area. Student leaders of the Marist Schools in South Africa volunteered at the December summer camp which was attended by over 400 children in the Addo area to add fun and learning to their Christmas holidays.

Joint Rosary Prayer 2023

By Dominican Convent Belgravia, Homepage news, Marist Brothers Linmeyer, Sacred Heart College, St David’s Marist Inanda, St Henry’s Marist College, St Joseph's Marist College

Every year, the Marist Schools in South Africa set aside an hour in October to say a decade of the Rosary during this special month. October is seen as the month of the Rosary due to the fact that the liturgical feast of Our Lady of the Rosary is celebrated annually on 7 October. As Marists, we have a special devotion to Mary and it is important to us to mark this month in a way that brings us all together in prayer.

To love the skin they are already in

By Dominican Convent Belgravia, Homepage news

On Tuesday 4 April, the actors of the Kwasah entertained us! Theatre Company, who came to share a very important message with our Grade 6 and Grade 7 learners. The play was titled: “The skin I am in” and is based on the storybook of the same name.

Through song, dance and rap battles, the cast taught the learners tolerance, diversity and most importantly – TO LOVE THE SKIN THEY ARE IN.

The play was amazing, vibrant, and necessary. We live in a world that all too often judges people on their looks, their choices and their abilities.

The children partook in the dances and the post discussions with the cast. It was inspiring to see that our learners paid attention to the actual message of the play, and that going forward they will not only love their own skin, but also try not judge or tease another person for their skin.

The play left the learners with much to think about and much to chat about.

Thank you Kwasha! For teaching, our learners’ valuable concepts like:

“Skin colour is only a problem if you make it a problem”

“Though my skin is a source of pride, it does not show you what is inside”

“All people are clever. All people are unique. Regardless of the skin they are in”
