Marist Mercy Care Summer Camp: Transforming Lives in the Sundays River Valley

By Marist Brothers Linmeyer, Sacred Heart College, St David’s Marist Inanda, St Henry’s Marist College, St Joseph's Marist College No Comments
In the heart of the Sundays River Valley, Marist Mercy Care continues its legacy of hope and transformation through the annual Summer Camp, welcoming over 420 children from the Addo area.
This year’s camp marked another significant milestone, now in its 9th year, this project brings together the newly appointed Marist Head Students from the five Marist schools across South Africa, as well as international volunteers from Germany through the Collaboration for Mission International (CMI) partnership.
As the largest Marist project in South Africa, Marist Mercy Care has been a cornerstone of community support for 18 years. The organization stands as one of the Eastern Cape’s largest non-profits, addressing critical needs in education, nutrition, and health care. Through its holistic approach, Marist Mercy Care empowers children and families in disadvantaged communities, providing them with opportunities to thrive.
This year’s camp highlighted the power of collaboration. The participation of Marist Head Students brought fresh energy, with young leaders stepping up to inspire and guide the children. Meanwhile, the presence of Marist alumni from Germany emphasized the global reach and unity of the Marist mission, showing that shared values can transcend borders.
The Summer Camp served as a platform to deliver Marist Mercy Care’s core mission areas:
  • Education: Engaging workshops and activities equipped children with skills, confidence, and knowledge to support their personal growth.
  • Nutrition: Daily meals ensured that every child had access to nutritious food, addressing hunger and promoting well-being.
  • Health Care: Health checks and awareness activities underscored the importance of maintaining good health in underprivileged communities.
Marist Mercy Care’s projects operate year-round, addressing systemic challenges in the Sundays River Valley. The organization’s Early Childhood Development Centre, Baby Day Care Centre, and extensive nutritional outreach programs serve as lifelines for many families in the area. Its health care clinic and community support initiatives continue to make a measurable difference in the lives of those most in need.
As Marist Mercy Care reflects on 18 years of service, the organization invites individuals and organizations to join its mission. Whether through volunteering, donations, or partnerships, every contribution helps sustain its vital work in education, health, and nutrition.
The Marist Mercy Care Summer Camp is more than an event—it’s a testament to the power of compassion, collaboration, and a shared commitment to building a brighter future for all. Together, we can continue to transform lives and communities across South Africa.

It was a joy to welcome Br Luis Carlos Gutierrez (Vicar General), Br Jorge Gaio (Econome General) and Br Emmanuel Mwanalirenji-Gunduloniwere (Provincial of Southern Africa) to all of our schools in October. Their interactions with all members of our schools were fruitful and displayed the essence of Marist values in action.

Heritage Day 2024 – Sacred Heart College

By Heritage Day 2024, Sacred Heart College No Comments

At Sacred Heart College, we take pride in our vibrant, diverse community, and this year’s Heritage Day celebration was a perfect reflection of that! Our students came together in their beautiful cultural attire, showcasing the rich tapestry of backgrounds that make our school so special. From traditional African garments to intricate Asian and European attire, the school grounds were alive with color, unity, and pride.

This event wasn’t just about honoring our past but celebrating the future we’re building together. Through the sharing of stories, songs, and dances, we were reminded that diversity is our strength. As Nelson Mandela said, “Our rich and varied cultural heritage has a profound power to help build our nation.”

The day was filled with joy as students, teachers, and parents united to celebrate the beauty of different cultures. By honoring our roots, Sacred Heart College fosters an environment where every student feels valued, helping us thrive as a community.

Happy Heritage Day! Let’s continue to cherish and celebrate our heritage today and every day!

Kicking Off the Academic Journey with the Grade 1 Bell Ringing

By Sacred Heart College No Comments

The start of a new school year is always filled with excitement and anticipation. Our Grade 1 students participated in a special ceremony to mark the beginning of their academic journey in primary school. The Grade 1 students gathered in front of the Chapel for the traditional bell-ringing ceremony. One by one, each child had the chance to walk up on stage and ring the ceremonial bell. The ringing symbolizes a student embarking on their educational path from Grade 1 and they will ring the bell again at Grade 12 Valedictory ceremony.  We know these students have bright futures, and we can’t wait to support them on their academic journey in the years to come. Congratulations to our new Grade 1 class of 2024! The bell has rung, and the adventure begins.

Primary School Rollerblade Disco!

By Sacred Heart College No Comments

The parking lot was transformed into a rollerblade rink on Friday, 16, February 2024, for our Primary School Rollerblade Disco event. Students strapped on their protective gear, accessories, and favourite outfits for a fun night of skating and dancing.  Upbeat music played all evening to keep the energy high. Our talented DJs entertained the crowd with all the classic roller-skating jams.   Students stopped by the food section between skating rounds to fuel up on Preggo Rolls, Burgers, Frosty Bites and Juice. The event wouldn’t have been possible without the help of our dedicated parent volunteers, we truly appreciate all that our parents contributed. Your support helped make this annual Primary School Rollerblade Disco an unforgettable night for the students.  Our students are already looking forward to lacing up their skates again next year for another fabulous roller disco event!

Ash Wednesday – Sacred Heart College

Ash Wednesday Blessings

On this sacred day, we begin our Lenten spiritual growth and renewal journey.

As we receive the ashes, may we reflect deeply on our mortality and humanity.

Let us walk together in contemplation, finding meaning in repentance and humility. Through prayer and compassion, we renew our connection to faith and purpose.

“For you are dust, and to dust you shall return.” Genesis 3:19

This Lent, may our hearts and minds be open to transformation. May we discover inner peace on this profound pilgrimage.

Wishing you light and blessings this Ash Wednesday.
